Recently I have been interested in my family's military history. Since we have been here since the Pilgrims I know that at least some of my ancestors have served our country. I (re)started with my dad, he served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. I knew he was on the aircraft carriers USS Midway and USS Lexington, but I didn't know much more. He had always told me that he just "flagged in the airplane" but it turns out that he was part of the Air team (V-2) which were responsible for arming the planes as well. After searching on Ancestry and Fold3, I was able to find him in two Navy Cruise books, which feel invaluable to my brother and myself. Additionally, I looked into my 3rd great grandfather, James Owen, who was heavily involved in the Onarga, IL I.O.O.F. and G.A.R. chapters. I was so intrigued that I even bought a replica I.O.O.F. (Independent Order of Odd Fellows) medal from ebay. I hope to hang it with the large portrait that I have recently acquired of him.
